Notes on this workshop
'AO'. The music begins and I feel my feet heavy on the earth, gently breathing out through the soles when my belly falls. The rythmic drumbeat calls to me, awakens my receptivity, and moves me right down at my base. If I allow myself to flow with this humming movement, I tune into the Yin aspects in my body and soul; those that deliver my weight to the earth, seeking to ground and to fall softly downwards. This powerful submission to gravity gives me greater stability and freedom in my whole being, particularly my upper body. The voices and tribal instrumentation in the music appeals to my creativity and exuberance, and alivens me. Now my rib cage and spine, head and arms are more open to rise to the skies. The sensation is one of reaching into the light; warming, power, creating, new possibilities, NEW movements. This is the domain of the Yang. Everything rises, the music becomes louder and more diverse. It’s as if my being is bursting from my chest. In a short time I have felt both Yin and Yang, and seen that one cannot exist without the polarity of the other. There is no better place to discover what this means than in dance. ‘AO’ is a long time favourite routine of mine because it is so rich and alive. While one moment you can feel delivered to your own private universe, in another you and your body and your voice are loud and bold, laughing and resonating with the vibrancy of the tribe. One moment in flow, another in staccato. One moment in darkness, the next in the light. We will be taking key tracks from the routine and exploring the interplay of yin and yang movements, as a way for you to discover how to better balance and embody these aspects that live deep in your being. And in the process, find your chest, pelvis and mind coming alive with possibilities and new experiences. They will move with more flow and power, something that will make you feel the wonder of being you, in your skin.

‘Chakradancer’ may seem to be a more passive routine when viewing it, however when you are in it, prepare to be surprised by the power and dynamism of your own voice and feel your duality awaken. The movements are cleverly designed to work on each of the seven main chakras from your base to the crown of the head, opening the channels of communication between each. A great opportunity to seek harmony between feminine and masculine aspects. The base chakra with it’s yin energy pulls downwards, anchors the pelvis and legs, and needs to be aligned with all other chakras to keep you grounded. The second chakra, alive, brazen, creative and sexual, needs a point of reference to keep it focussed and energized. Aligning the first two chakras is the most important for your journey in movement, to give you creative flow and balance. From here we move up through the chakras exploring yin and yang through movement and breathwork, constantly keeping in contact with our voices. What I love about Chakradancer is it doesn’t require a lot of energy, rather it builds energy, and I always come out of class feeling empowered and vital. This combination of reaching internally to re-energize, and then growing outwards from reflects the beautiful interplay between Yin and Yang in movement.
